Top security tips for safety at large events

The sporting months of the summer are upon us, and as both the UK and France remain on their highest states of alert, security and policing at large scale events has been markedly tightened¹  and travel delays caused by security hoaxes have become more prevalent.

Rob Condina, travel risk expert from International SOS and Control Risks says, "security hoaxes and scares have significantly increased at airports, train stations and public spaces, in the UK, Europe and beyond, following the recent security incidents in Manchester and London. Temporary evacuations or proactive isolation and detonation of suspect items and unaccompanied bags have caused travel disruptions and allowing additional time to get to and from events is essential.”

Condina continues, “understandably public concerns have been heightened recently but it is important to remember that at big crowded summer events, you are far more likely to be affected by the loss or theft of money, phones or other important possessions than you are by terrorism. However, keeping vigilant and being prepared in case of an incident are key elements to keeping safe this summer.”

International SOS has issued the following top points of advice to consider when in crowded places:

• Be aware of your surroundings and remain vigilant of suspicious activity.
• Know where the exits are in case you have to react to what is a very unlikely event.
• Consider ways to avoid congestion and heavily populated areas. This could include waiting and leaving games after the majority of attendees.
• Review transportation options for getting to and from events. Taxis or walking may be safer than public transport.
• When possible, walk against the direction of oncoming traffic.
• Monitor the news and follow official security advisories.
• Save emergency contacts (police, ambulance, embassy, Line Managers, Local contacts) on your mobile phone and make sure it is charged and with you.
• Carry a photocopy of your ID.
• Be aware of the impact of alcohol on your judgement.

Elite counter-terrorism officers are among a deployment of 23,000 French police currently ensuring the safety of spectators and cyclists at the Tour de France.

Lord’s Cricket Ground installed heavy concrete barricades around the stadium to protect fans from terror attacks ahead of the England vs South Africa, first Test.

Wimbledon tennis opened amid the tightest security in the tournament’s 131-year history, with a record number of armed officers, undercover police and security staff in place. Anti-vehicle security barriers are also in place at the gates of the grounds. 

The owners of the London Stadium, built to host the London 2012 Olympics have also implemented additional ‘hostile vehicle mitigation’ measures ahead of this summer’s athletics and para-athletics World Championships. Roads around the Olympic Park are expected to be closed, with concrete barriers in place to stop any vehicle attacks.
